CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — What would happen if an astronaut came unglued in space and, say, destroyed the ship’s oxygen system or tried to open the hatch and kill everyone aboard?

That was the question on some minds after the apparent breakdown of Lisa Nowak, arrested in Orlando this month on charges she tried to kidnap and kill a woman she regarded as her rival for another astronaut’s affections.

It turns out NASA has a detailed set of written procedures for dealing with a suicidal or psychotic astronaut in space. The documents, obtained this week by The Associated Press, say the astronaut’s crewmates should bind his wrists and ankles with duct tape, tie him down with a bungee cord and inject him with tranquilizers if necessary.

George Washington, Staying in Character

 by

Weekend Edition Saturday, February 17, 2007 · In 1777, Gen. George Washington and his troops faced British and Hessian soldiers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He issued a firm order that no matter how barbaric enemy armies might be, he would not abide any such behavior in his own troops.

Since Shrub fancies himself a student of the history of great men, maybe he ought to read how great men behaved (more here). And since NPR helpfully provided a sound clip, the illegitimate National Command Authority won’t have to move his lips while reading.

Where to begin?

Not sure if it’s a week from hell or a week to remember, but it wrapped up with a bit of coup counting . . .  passed Linux with an A! Just goes to show there’s hope for us all.

It’s nowhere near as bad as it’s been in the great Northwestern U.S., but it’s colder’n’ell here in western Va. It snows just enough to make you want to kill something, because it sure ain’t deep enough to stop one from getting our of the house. But it was cold enough today so that I had a snootload of ice on my mustache going to work this morning.

And while I was complaining about my own personal discomfort, our illegitimate-bastard-election-thieving-enemy-of-the-public-scumbag National Command Authority is still at it trying to blow sunshine and lollipops up the collective skirt and pantsleg of the American public.

I’m sure not going to give him the dignity of calling him president.  Nothing like waking up one day and discovering that a armed robber/thug has taken up residence in your home; brought along Ratso Rizzo, Darth Vader and a host of other pseudo-ideological vermin as guests, and ordered pizza and beer on your credit card. If I ever hear another Republican tell me that I’m disloyal to the flag and the troops for holding such sentiments, I’ll be sorely tested not to haul off and slam their head in the nearest unflushed toilet.

It’s times like these when I’m pretty sure there is actually a segment of humanity out there as bad as child molesters.

Be cool

It’s good to see that the astronaut corps has broken another gender barrier . . . or, “I will not be ignored!”

I’d just love to hear someone say that the U.S.’s early male astronauts were sex-crazed pigs after this . . .

Astronaut charged with kidnap attempt

By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press Writer

“An astronaut drove 900 miles and donned a disguise to confront a woman she believed was her rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot, police said. She was arrested Monday and charged with attempted kidnapping and other counts.

“U.S. Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, 43, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, was also charged with attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail and is scheduled to make a court appearance Tuesday.

“Police said Nowak drove from her home in Houston to the Orlando International Airport to confront Colleen Shipman.

“Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein, a pilot during space shuttle Discovery’s trip to the space station last December, police said.

“Nowak told police that her relationship with Oefelein was “more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship,” according to an arrest affidavit. Police officers recovered a love letter to Oefelein in her car.

“NASA spokesman James Hartsfield in Houston said that, as of Monday, Nowak’s status with the astronaut corps remained unchanged.”

Rest in peace Molly, but make sure we don’t

Filed under: Uncategorized — Frontier Former Editor @ 12:40 am

One of the worst things that could have happened to this country did on Wednesday.

Molly Ivins may not have been the reason I started in journalism, but she surely helped me develop the kinds of irony, skepticism and disrespect that all journalists need to have in these times.

Please, all of you remember this last graf from her last published column:

“We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we’re for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush’s proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on Jan. 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, “Stop it, now!”

And remember that Molly was a liberal in the grand tradition of centuries ago.

Even Dubya had to put out a statement (from the Washington Post):

“Molly Ivins was a Texas original,” Bush said in a statement. “I respected her convictions, her passionate belief in the power of words, and her ability to turn a phrase. She fought her illness with that same passion.”

Shame that worthless piece of dogshit didn’t bother to pay attention to what she was writing.

Thank you Molly.

And screw you, George W. Bush.
