Some culture for the unwashed, semi-washed and fully-showered and/or bathed

For those of us who – heaven forbid! – read, might I recommend for a final summer read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals ? Speaking as a former history major, I can say with a modicum of authority that it is one of the better monographs on the political machinations and philosophical debate leading to Lincoln’s election as President. And it leaves one wondering how close things came – read and you’ll see. It’s good history and good literature.

And while I’ve gotten my Steely Dan fix for the week, I still have a spot in my black, shrivelled heart for Paris Combo. Here’s a dose for those of you wishing they were sitting in a Left Bank cafe . . .

Hopefully I’ll work up to my bitter, climactic screed on why no  candidate this year is even marginally worthy of attention as the right person at the right time to start this country turning to something better some day.

Dueling Steely Dan

I’m sorry, but I have to laugh at youngsters these days who think groups with suggestively-title songs and oblique, bawdy names are somehow offensive and subversive. One of my all-time favorite groups – even at age 46 – is named after a dildo mentioned in a book by America’s greatest dope fiend . . . . yes, I’m talkin’ bout Steely Dan.

My good friend ~M (not to be confused with a child killer played by Peter Lorre) and I exchange our online Dan finds from time to time. Since he raised my live Dan with this classic, I’ll see his and raise with . . . .

Top that, you little bastards . . .

Come to think of it, Zevon and Tom Jones each kick Prince’s ass

You know sleep deprivation is kicking in when Kinky Friedman’s big headed visage kicks in just before the witching hour. A shame I hadn’t heard about this until almost a year afterward . . .

Summer evening music

One of those songs that always put me in the summer mood back when I was in elementary and junior high school. Still does, too . . .

So did and does this . . .

then call in the B-52s.

Bet Nixon never thought he’d hear that outside the context of Cambodia.

that he didn’t get the 25 years for being a boy band creator.

Boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman sentenced to 25 years in federal prison (Orlando Sentinel)

“. . . Boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman was sentenced this morning to 25 years in federal prison for running a lengthy, systematic con that artificially inflated his net worth and cheated people out of $300 million . . . Pearlman, 53, was once the toast of Orlando. His financial empire once included popular musical acts the Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync; an airplane-charter business; and Church Street Station, an iconic piece of real estate in Orlando’s downtown.”

“On June 14, federal investigators tracked Pearlman down in the lush resort town of Bali, Indonesia, registered at a hotel under the name A. Incognito Johnson.”

Maybe he can form a new boy band in prison. He could start here.
