What’s the difference between . . . .

Sarah ‘task from God’ Palin and James K. ‘Manifest Destiny’ Polk?

The glasses and lipstick make Polk look more butch.

Donna Brazile, in her previous guises as a Democratic presidential campaign strategist, generally leaves me with the same taste in my political mouth as did Roger Ailes, Lee Atwater and others. But Brazile made an interesting response Sunday on Wolf Blitzer’s Sunday morning gabfest about Sarah Palin’s mockery of community activists. This is a very close paraphrase if not a perfectly accurate quote:

“Jesus was a community organizer. Pontius was a governor.”

  2. Senor FFE

I flatter myself that you and I agree on so many things (apart of course from Politics & Religion and whether England should be allowed to leave the European Reich in order to join the US Union)

??? Is it really fair to “tar” that kindly-looking Lady from Russian North America with President-Polk’s dubious brush

    After all :

    1. In 1844 only after the precautions had been taken to exclude Women, Negro & Native-American Voters from Voting, Mr Polk had a minute 0.15% majority (39,000 out of 2.6 million voters)

    * even Mr Bush did better in 2000, with an 11%+ majority (5 Supreme Court Judges against 4 – I dinnae ken whether this included any wimmin)

    2. Mr Polk was a Slave-Owning Democrat (not a Gun-Toting Republican) – surely a Gentleman from Virginia knows that one should not bandy a Lady’s name, especially if the Lady has possession of a sniper rifle, suitably supplied with ample ammunition

    3. Mr Polk had a disastrous impact on US History

Without Mr Polk in 1600 Transylvania Avenue :

    a. would the US have grabbed so much Mexican & British Territory ?

    b. Without the US greedily gobbling up California & Washington State, the World would have been spared (1) Computers (solely invented by Americans after capturing that German Sub with the Enigma maschine) and (2) Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle

Wasn’t it Mr Polk who laid the ground for the US Civil War by fighting the Mexican War to seize 50% of Mexico’s territory

If Americans want to avoid a 4 US dollar gallon, perhaps they should not be too disparaging of Alaskans with their Oil reserves

    Your obedient servant etc

  3. Ah, but to give the mother country its due:

Britain released that hit tune ‘La Bombe’ after obtaining an Enigma machine five years before our Nantucket sleigh ride. I do find it rather irritating that one of our cinema types trivialized the real story of U-570 by adding a digit and adding far too many Hollywoodisms. I refer you to here for a fair synopsis of the real events:

    As for our Northern cousin:

    – modern Republicanism is a philosophical descendant of mid-19th century Democratism, regardless of what any lipstick-wearing livestock might have you believe. And a gun is far more tractable than that rascally Dred Scott when you take it places.

    – the untapped oil reserves in Alaska may be miniscule compared to what mother Russia may well be able to tap in the foreseeable future.

    – as for any impact on U.S. history, the night is still young for Mme. Palin.

    – Yes, Herr Bush’s stunning vote majority included one woman.

    – Mme. Palin has already claimed our attempts to subjugate a former British protectorate ‘a task from God’ – a Polkian comment if ever there were one.

-And I suspect that, in order to maintain their $1,200-per-person-per year lifestyle, Alaska would be quite happy to see $4/gallon gas in the lower 48 and island 1.

I do adore our mutual cynicism and ironicism.

  4. @g eagle:
One is shocked to see a bird so often seen in Russian America (and a little bit of BritCan America) touting North Slope drilling.

No economist supports more drilling as a way to lower gas prices. If that’s the reason they want to drill, then the negatives outweigh the benefits ( (n>0) outweighs zero every time).

Hilary Clinton called that “elitist thinking.” Republicans have nastier words.
