Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Indefensible

By Richard Cohen

“On the cold moonlit evening of March 5, 1770,” writes David McCullough in his magisterial “John Adams,” “the streets of Boston were covered by nearly a foot of snow.” A crowd set upon a lone British sentry at Boston’s Province House, taunting him. Quickly, reinforcements arrived, and so did a larger crowd. Soon the crowd hurled snowballs, chunks of ice, oyster shells and stones. The soldiers, now nine, opened fire, killing five Bostonians — “bloody butchery,” Samuel Adams called it. Only one lawyer would defend the British soldiers. He was a different Adams — John Adams, a good man on the path to being great.

I resurrect this tale about Adams because it is sorely needed. Just this month, an official in the Bush administration, a deputy assistant secretary of defense named Charles D. Stimson, suggested that lawyers who defend terrorism suspects being held at Guantanamo not only should not do so but that their firms ought to be blackballed as a result.

“I think, quite honestly, when corporate CEOs see that those firms are representing the very terrorists who hit their bottom line back in 2001, those CEOs are going to make those law firms choose between representing terrorists or representing reputable firms,” he said in a radio interview. You may want to read that again.

  1. Dear FFE

As a Rooinek, so many things American are a bemusing puzzle

If American Independence had been such a “good thing” and if Washington & his “Patriotic” Supporters were such generous supporters of democracy, then :

    1. why did so many Americans (was it over 100,000 ?) prefer to emigrate to Canada rather than live in an “independent” United States

    2. why did Slavery survive so long in the USA

    3. If alive in 1861, would Washington have joined Lee’s Army of Virginia

    4. Does Washington have any living descendants ?

  2. In reverse order:

There are several Custises still living as well as a few Washingtons.

‘What if’ is a dangerous game sometimes, but might I refer you to Washington’s handling of the ‘Whiskey Rebellion’ as a small barometer of his views on the Union? One might also consider his views on states rights as he encamped at Valley Forge and tried to assemble adequate forces at Bunker Hill and a few other campaigngs during the Revolution.

re. 2 and 1: We are a schizophrenic nation when it comes to revolution. While ours was primarily an economic revolt with certain philosophical underpinnings, many of the important figures saw the philosophical side as every bit as important as the economic side. Over the years, we have touted the virtues of our revolution, yet we are loathe to export the idea that anyone feeling repressed can get up and do the same lest someone upset our economic or strategic apple cart.

  3. FFF (If I may be permitted to abbreviate you.) You have won my undying respect with your final sentence. Just a word of warning about the G Eagle herr person. He has a Falstaffian ability to hide his real thoughts in plain view!

  4. Meneer Frontier Future Editor

“[The perceptive & sagacious AerChie] will give you a very pretty notion of me and will teach you not to believe a word I say

I am particularly unlucky in meeting with a person so well able to expose my real character in a part of the [blogoshere] where I had hoped to pass myself off with some degree of credit

Indeed, [Senor AerChie], it is very ungenerous in you to mention all that you knew to [this Eagle’s] disadvantage – and give me leave to say, very impolitic too – for it is provoking me to retaliate, and such things may come out, as will shock [AerChie’s many admiring Commenters] to hear

    …..

[FFE] shall hear then – but prepare yourself for something very dreadful

[,,, Err … verdammt …. but there is nothing dreadful about AerChie & his excellent blog – the wonderful Wildlife Photos (FFE may wodner about the Spiders & the Plastic Snake), the Limericks, the Australian Landscape, the mocking of an Eagle & American politicians etc etc]

…. But I am ill-qualified to recommend myself to strangers ……”

  5. FFF, I apologise for signor G Eagle’s confusion. It is largely brought about by his own lack of a blog. Ill-qualified as he is, perhaps he needs to join the Legion Etangere and get to meet the fleas of a thousand Algerian Camels! Uh oh – I feel a limerick coming on!

  6. My personal favorite, from “Breaker Morant: . . .

There once was a lad from Austrah-lia
Who upon his arse had tattoed a dahlia
    The color was fine,
    Likewise the design.
But the aroma . . . oohhh, that was a fahlia.

  7. A regally rich Greyish Eagle
Stopped photos with threats loudly legal
    But headlines recorded
    The details quite sordid
Of how he molested a beagle!

Umm – my favourite is from a limerick newsgroup (I wish I had written it)-

While playing strip poker with Kate
    I noticed I’d gotten a straight
    but just to the six
    and Katie restricts
her folds to those having an eight.

So I had to toss in my hand!

err … I think you mean “Legion etRangere” – I can tell that neither of you are French Canadians

The erudite RegenCoaster & her friend Philipa (the Gourmet-Terror of the Tree Octopus) would have picked up my reference

PS FFE – Isn’t our Friend AerChie due to give us another RainCoater cartoon on his blog (if he dare) !!
