I guess my Blogspot baggage will be left at the gate . . .

Not much luck in the FAQ’s here on how to drag over 10 months’ worth of my other blog, so they’ll probably continue to co-exist for the near future as Norman Bates and his dear old mother did.

And M. Eagle, I never said the Roman Republic was a perfect social contract – just a contract.

  1. Salve

Ecce autem monstrum subitum et oculis mirabile

[Lo, however, a monster sudden & wonderful to behold – Virgil Aeneid VIII line 81]

Please do not shew this translation to Aerchie Archive. In his honest, educated Antipodean way, he would denounce mistranlation

He would of course rightly say that “Monstrum” means sign or portent

but Monster (or Monsters) better seems to reflect the class of 30+ 14-year old schoolboys, suffering from an excess of mental improvement all those years ago … before FFE was born

    Vale et
    Tot siens

    Aquila Non Candida

    PS Roman Republic’s contract

The American legal system has features that seem eccentic to a Rooinek’s eye, but in English Law, a contract requires 2 agreeing parties – I doubt whether the Slaves or Ladies did much agreeing !!!

  2. Very true, and the contract deteriorated very quickly even in its limited scope. Certainly, Plato and other Greek philosophers noted the distinction between and idea and its manifestation, so please don’t assume that I’m indulging in nostalgia for the Roman empire. But there was an attempt at a social contract there.

After all, did the Magna Carta on its face espouse democracy, or was it a power grab by the nobility? Either way, it was a start toward representative democracy.

  3. Uh, there’s an automated importer from Blogger. You can find it in the FAQ’s or go to the forum and stick “Importer” into the search box. It even grabs your comments.
